Howell Thomas Heflin was born in Poulan, Georgia, USA. He was an American politician who served in the United States Senate from Alabama from 1979 to 1997. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He earned a BA degree from Birmingham-Southern College, Birmingham in 1942. During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, he served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. He was awarded the Silver Star for valor in combat and recipient of two Purple Heart medals, having seen action on Bougainville and Guam. He earned his JD degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1948. He served as a law professor, while concurrently practicing law in Tuscumbia, Alabama. He served as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court from 1971-1977.
