Hilton Kramer was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American art critic and editor. He earned a BA degree in English from Syracuse University in 1950. He studied literature and philosophy at Harvard University, Columbia University, Indiana University, and the New School for Social Research. In 1952, Kramer took issue with a prevailing understanding of action painting as a "psychological event". He took issue with Pop art, Conceptual art, and Postmodern art. He worked as the editor of Arts Magazine, art critic for The Nation, and as chief art critic for The New York Times from 1965 to 1982. His "Media Watch" column was published weekly in the New York Post from 1993 to 1997. He co-founded the conservative magazine The New Criterion, for which he was also co-editor and publisher. He wrote several books include: The Age of the Avant-Garde, The revenge of the Philistines, The Twilight of the Intellectuals, and The Triumph of Modernism.
