Herman Boerhaave was born in Voorhout, Netherlands. He was a Dutch physician. He is best known for demonstrating the relation of symptoms to lesions and, in addition, he was the first to isolate the chemical urea from urine. He was the first physician that put thermometer measurements to clinical practice. His motto was Simplex sigillum veri; The simple is the sign of the true. He took his degree in philosophy from the University of Leiden in 1689. He took his medical degree from the University of Harderwijk in 1693. In 1709, he served as a professor of botany and medicine. In 1728, he was elected into the French Academy of Sciences, and two years later into the Royal Society of London.
