Helmut Josef Michael Kohl was born in Ludwigshafen, Germany. He is a German statesman, who served as Chancellor of Germany from 1982 to 1998 and as the chairman of the Christian Democratic Union from 1973 to 1998. From 1969 to 1976, he was the 3rd Minister President of Rhineland-Palatinate. In 1958, he received his doctorate degree for his thesis "The Political Developments in the Palatinate and the Reconstruction of Political Parties after 1945".
