Hampton Barnett Hawes, Jr. was born in Los Angeles, California, USA. He was an American bebop and hard-bop jazz pianist, recognized as one of the finest and most influential of the 1950s. He won the "New Star of the Year" award in Down Beat magazine, and "Arrival of the Year" in Metronome in 1956. His albums list shown below: Hampton Hawes Trio, All Night Session, Everybody Likes Hampton Hawes, Four!, For Real!, Universe, Blues for Walls, Northern Windows, Hampton Hawes at the Piano, The Sermon, Bird Song, High in the Sky, Live At Memory Lane, I'll Remember April, and The Green Leaves of Summer. He was also the author of what is now a classic jazz memoir, Raise Up Off Me, which won the Deems-Taylor Award for music writing in 1975.
