Haldan Keffer Hartline was born in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American physiologist. In 1967, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Ragnar Granit and George Wald for his work in analyzing the neurophysiological mechanisms of vision. In 1923, he earned a BS degree in biology from Lafayette College, Easton, Pennsylvania. He began his study of retinal electrophysiology as a National Research Council Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1927. He was Associate Professor of Physiology at Cornell Medical College, New York City from 1940-41. He served as a professor of biophysics and chairman of the department at Johns Hopkins University from 1949-53. He served as a professor of neurophysiology at Rockefeller University, New York City from 1953-83.
