Henry Graham Greene was born in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. He was an English novelist regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century. He studied history at Balliol College, Oxford. After graduating, he worked first as a private tutor and then as a journalist – first on the Nottingham Journal and then as a sub-editor on The Times. He was shortlisted, in 1967, for the Nobel Prize for Literature. He wrote several novels include: The Man Within, Stamboul Train, Brighton Rock, The Confidential Agent, The Power and the Glory, The Heart of the Matter, The Quiet American, Our Man in Havana, A Burnt-Out Case, The Honorary Consul, The Human Factor, Doctor Fischer of Geneva, Monsignor Quixote, and The Tenth Man.
