Graciliano Ramos was born in Quebrangulo, Alagoas, Brazil. He was a Brazilian journalist, politician, and writer. In most of his novels he depicts the precarious situation of the poor inhabitants of the Brazilian sertão. After finishing high school in Maceió, he became a collaborator of the newspaper Jornal de Alagoas in 1909, where he published a sonnet called "Céptico" under the pen name Almeida Cunha. He also published texts in the magazine O Malho, under the pen name Feliciano de Olivença. In 1927, he was elected mayor of Palmeira dos Índios from 1928-1930. He became a member of the Communist Party of Brazil in 1945. He wrote several books include: Caetés(novel), São Bernardo(novel), Angústia(novel), Vidas Secas(novel), Insônia(short story), Histórias de Alexandre(short story), Infância(memoir), and Viagem(memoir).
