Grace Abbott was born in Grand Island, Nebraska, USA. She was an American social worker who specifically worked in improving the rights of immigrants, especially those from eastern Europe, and advancing child welfare, especially the regulation of child labor. She graduated from Grand Island College in 1898. She worked as a high school teacher in 1906. In 1909, she received a Ph.M. in political science from the University of Chicago. She was head of the US Children's Bureau from 1921-34. She served as a professor of public welfare at the University of Chicago from 1934-1939. She wrote several books include: The immigrant and the community, The Child and the State, and From Relief to Social Security.
