Sir Gerald Bernard Kaufman was born in Leeds, England. He is a British Labour politician who has been a Member of Parliament since 1970, first for Manchester Ardwick and then for Manchester Gorton. He is known for his strong anti-Israel views. He was a government minister in the 1970s and a member of the Shadow Cabinet in the 1980s. He is the current Father of the House after the retirement of Peter Tapsell in 2015, which also makes him the United Kingdom's oldest sitting MP. He graduated with a degree in philosophy, politics, and economics from the University of Oxford. In 1999, he acted as chairman of the Booker Prize judges. He has written several books include: How to Be a Minister, My Life in the Silver Screen, and Meet Me in St. Louis.
