Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon was born in Montbard, Burgundy, France. He was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist, and science writer. He attended the Jesuit College of Godrans in Dijon. In 1728, he left Dijon to study mathematics and medicine at the University of Angers in France. His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. He published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. He wrote several books include: Histoire Naturelle, All the World's Birds, 368 Animal Illustrations from Buffon's "Natural History", The Natural History of Birds, The history of singing birds, and Buffon on Race.
