George Gaylord Simpson was born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was an American paleontologist. He was a major participant in the modern evolutionary synthesis, contributing Tempo and mode in evolution, The meaning of evolution and The major features of evolution. He was an expert on extinct mammals and their intercontinental migrations. He coined the word hypodigm in 1940, and published extensively on the taxonomy of fossil and extant mammals. He studied Physics, meteorology and Astronomy in Berlin, Heidelberg and Innsbruck. He obtained a doctorate in astronomy in 1905 based on a dissertation written under the supervision of Julius Bauschinger at Friedrich Wilhelms University, Berlin.
