Frances Fox Piven was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She is an American professor of political science and sociology at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, where she has taught since 1982. She is known equally for her contributions to social theory and for her social activism. She received a B.A. degree in City Planning in 1953, an M.A. degree in 1956, and a Ph.D. in 1962, all from the University of Chicago. She has written several books include: Regulating the poor, Poor people's movements, Challenging Authority, Who's Afraid of Frances Fox Piven?, The war at home, Lessons for Our Struggle, New class war, Why Americans Still Don't Vote, and The breaking of the American social compact.
