Étienne Gilson was born in Paris, France. He was a French philosopher. He spent his entire life seeking wisdom and truth in the spirit of Saint Thomas Aquinas. While studying under the notable French philosophers Lucien Levy-Bruhl and Henri Bergson, he developed a remarkable knowledge of Scholastic thought and history that informed his writings and lectures throughout his distinguished career. He received his degree in Philosophy from the University of Paris in 1906. In 1913 he took his doctoral degree. In 1919, he became professor of the history of Philosophy at the University of Strasbourg. From 1921 to 1932, he taught the history of medieval philosophy at the University of Paris. He also taught for three years at Harvard. He wrote several books including God and Philosophy, The Unity of Philosophical Experience, The Spirit of Mediaeval Philosophy, Dante and Philosophy, and The Arts of the Beautiful.
