Esther Perel was born in Antwerp, Belgium. She is a Belgian psychotherapist, speaker, Counselor, and author notable for exploring the tension between the need for security and the need for freedom in human relationships. She promoted the concept of Erotic Intelligence in a best selling book Mating in Captivity which was published in 2006 and since has been translated into 24 languages. Her critically acclaimed viral TED Talks have collectively reached over 10 million viewers. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, an AASECT certified sex therapist, a member of the American Family Therapy Academy and of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research.
