Ernst Thalmann was born in Hamburg, Germany. He was a German politician. He was the leader of the Communist Party of Germany during much of the Weimar Republic. He joined the Social Democratic Party in 1903, served on the Western Front during World War I, and in 1920 entered the Communist Party. As a member of the left wing and leader of the powerful Wasserkante district, he became a member of the party’s central committee in 1923. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1933 and held in solitary confinement for eleven years, before being shot in Buchenwald on Adolf Hitler's orders in 1944.
