Ermes Effron Borgnino, known as Ernest Borgnine was born in Hamden, Connecticut, USA. He was an American film and television actor and naval officer. He was an unconventional lead in many films of the 1950s, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1955 for Marty. On television, he played Quinton McHale in the 1962–1966 series McHale's Navy and co-starred in the mid-1980s action series Airwol. He earned an Emmy Award nomination at age 92 for his work on the series ER. He joined the United States Navy in October 1935. He served a total of almost ten years in the Navy and obtained the rank of gunner's mate 1st class. Borgnine's military awards include: Navy Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal with 3⁄16" bronze star, World War II Victory Medal, Lone Sailor Award, and California Commendation Medal.
