Erasmus Darwin was born at Elston Hall, Nottinghamshire near Newark-on-Trent, England. He was an English physician, botanist, inventor, natural philosopher, naturalist, and poet. He was a member of the Darwin–Wedgwood family, which includes his grandsons Charles Darwin and Francis Galton. He obtained his medical education at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. As a naturalist, he formulated one of the first formal theories on evolution in Zoonomia, or, The Laws of Organic Life. He also presented his evolutionary ideas in verse, in particular in the posthumously published poem The Temple of Nature. He also wrote Economy of Vegetation, and together the two were published as The Botanic Garden. He wrote his popular poem The Loves of the Plants in 1789.
