Emil Ludwig was born in Breslau, Germany. He was a German biographer, journalist, and writer, known for his biographies and study of historical "greats." In 1906, he moved to Switzerland, but, during World War I, he worked as a foreign correspondent for the Berliner Tageblatt in Vienna and Istanbul. Many of his biographies have appeared in English translation: Napoleon; Bismarck; William Hohenzollern; Goethe; Lincoln; Hindenburg; Roosevelt: A Study in Fortune and Power; Three Portraits: Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin; and Beethoven.
