Barbara Mertz was born in Canton, Illinois, USA. She was an American author who wrote under her own name as well as under the pseudonyms Elizabeth Peters and Barbara Michaels. She was graduated from the University of Chicago with a bachelor's degree in 1947 and a master's degree in 1950. In 1952 she received a PhD in Egyptology from the University of Chicago. Under her own name she is the author of Temples, Tombs and Hieroglyphs, A Popular history of Ancient Egypt and Red Land, Black Land, Daily Life in Ancient Egypt. Under her pseudonym Barbara Michaels, she wrote twenty nine novels of suspense. As Elizabeth Peters, she produced thirty seven mystery-suspense novels, many of them set in Egypt and the Middle East. She was named Grand Master at the inaugural Anthony Awards in 1986 and Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America at the Edgar Awards in 1998. In 2003, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Malice Domestic Convention.
