Sir Douglas Mawson was born in Shipley, West Yorkshire, England. He was an Australian geologist, Antarctic explorer and academic. He graduated in 1902 with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. In 1905 Mawson was appointed lecturer in mineralogy and petrology in the University of Adelaide.
