About
Donald James Woods was born in Hobeni, Transkei. He was a South African journalist, author, and anti-apartheid activist. He was educated at Christian Brothers College in Kimberley. As editor of the Daily Dispatch, he was known for befriending fellow activist Steve Biko, who died in police custody after being detained by the South African government. Woods continued his campaign against apartheid in London, and in 1978 became the first private citizen to address the United Nations Security Council. Woods’s book Biko and his personal experiences as described in his autobiography, Asking for Trouble, inspired the 1987 film Cry Freedom.
