The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It’s nothing of the kind. The game is about glory. It’s about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.

Danny Blanchflower was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. He was a former Northern Ireland international footballer, football manager and journalist. He is perhaps best known for his quote: "The game is about glory. It’s about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." He was the first Irishman to achieve a half century of caps when he played against Wales in 1962. Following his retirement as a player, Blanchflower coached at Spurs for a number of years, and double-winning manager Bill Nicholson intended for Blanchflower to be his long-term successor. He became manager of Northern Ireland for a brief spell in 1978. However, he won only three of his 15 games in charge and he left them in September 1979.
