Daniel Bell was born in New York City, New York. He was an American sociologist, writer, editor and professor emeritus at Harvard University, best known for his contributions to the study of post-industrialism. His three best known works are The End of Ideology, The Coming of Post-Industrial Society and The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism. He spent most of the next twenty years as a journalist, but ultimately earned a Ph.D. from Columbia in 1960. He began his professional life as a journalist, being managing editor of The New Leader magazine, labor editor of Fortune and later co-editor of The Public Interest magazine. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Sociological Association in 1992.
