Charles Bernard "Charlie" Rangel was born in Harlem in New York City. He is an American politician. He is the U.S. Representative for New York's 13th congressional district. A member of the Democratic Party, he is the second-longest currently serving member of the House of Representatives, serving continuously since 1971. He was the first African-American Chair of the influential House Ways and Means Committee. He graduated from New York University in 1957 and St. John's University School of Law in 1960. He then worked as a private lawyer, Assistant U.S. Attorney, and legal counsel during the early-mid-1960s. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds, the Bronze Star with Valor for his actions in the face of death, and three battle stars.
