Cavett Robert was born in Starkville, Mississippi. He was an American businessman and speaker. He was the founder of the National Speakers Association. He studied law at Washington and Lee University. He joined Toastmasters International and won the International Speaking Contest on his second attempt, launching his speaking career. He was awarded the Golden Gavel Award from Toastmasters International and Speaker of the Year by United Airlines and the International Speakers Network, at a time when very few corporations hired professional motivational speakers. In July 1979, Robert was honored with NSA’s first Member of the Year Award, later renamed “The Cavett Award.” The title of his book Leaving a Lasting Legacy is his best epitaph, as he lived that motto! He had many professions throughout his life. He taught school in a one-room schoolhouse. He was a gas line installer. He was a lawyer.
