Carol Bellamy was born and raised in Scotch Plains, New Jersey. She is an American activist, CEO, educator and politician. She has been Director of the Peace Corps, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund, and President and CEO of World Learning. In April 2009, Bellamy was appointed as Chair of the International Baccalaureate Board of Governors. Between 2010 and 2013, she was the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Global Partnership for Education. She earned her law degree from New York University School of Law in 1968. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Guatemala from 1963 to 1965. She was a member of the New York State Senate from 1973 to 1977, sitting in the 180th, 181st and 182nd New York State Legislatures. She is a former Fellow of the Harvard Institute of Politics at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and an honorary member of Pi Alpha Alpha. She received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Bates College in 2003. In Japan, she was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun in 2006.
