Bernardin de Saint-Pierre was a French writer and botanist. He is best known for his 1788 novel Paul and Virginia, now largely forgotten, but in the 19th century a very popular children's book. In 1795 he was elected to the Institut de France, in 1797 manager of the Botanical Gardens and in 1803 member of the Académie française.
