Howard Washington Thurman was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA. He was an American author, philosopher, theologian, pastor, educator, and activist. Thurman's theology of radical nonviolence influenced and shaped a generation of civil rights activists, and he was a key mentor to leaders within the movement, including Martin Luther King, Jr. He graduated from Morehouse College as valedictorian in 1923. In 1925, he was ordained as a Baptist minister at First Baptist Church of Roanoke, Virginia. He graduated from Rochester Theological Seminary in May 1926. He served as pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Oberlin, Ohio from 1926-1928. He served as dean of Rankin Chapel at Howard University from 1932 to 1944 and as dean of Marsh Chapel at Boston University from 1953 to 1965. He wrote several books include: Jesus and the disinherited, Deep is the hunger, Meditations of the heart, The creative encounter, The growing edge, Footprints of a dream, Mysticism and the Experience of Love, Disciplines of the spirit, The luminous darkness, The search for common ground, The mood of Christmas, The Negro spiritual speaks of life and death, Temptations of Jesus, and With head and heart.
