Emily Kathleen Anne Mortimer was born in Hammersmith, London, England. She is an English actress and screenwriter. Her first feature film role was opposite Val Kilmer in The Ghost and the Darkness, also in 1996. She is also known for playing roles in Lars and the Real Girl, Harry Brown, Shutter Island, and Hugo. In 2003, she won an Independent Spirit Award for her performance in Lovely and Amazing. Before becoming an actress, she wrote a column for the Daily Telegraph, and was screenwriter for an adaptation of Lorna Sage's memoir, Bad Blood. She worked in a TV adaptation of Dame Catherine Cookson's The Glass Virgin. Subsequent TV roles included Sharpe's Sword and Coming Home.
