Herbert Bayard Swope Sr. was born in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. He was an American editor and journalist. He spent most of his career at the New York World newspaper. During the First World War a series of articles entitled "Inside the German Empire" won him the Pulitizer Prize for reporting. A book of these articles, German Empire: In the Third Year of the War, was published in 1917. He was called the greatest reporter of his time by Lord Northcliffe of the London Daily Mail. He was the first newspaperman to employ the "op-ed" concept of opinion pieces printed opposite the editorial page.
