Harvey Gallagher Cox Jr. was born in Malvern, Pennsylvania, USA. He is an American theologian who served as the Hollis Professor of Divinity at the Harvard Divinity School, until his retirement in October 2009. Cox's research and teaching focus on theological developments in world Christianity, including liberation theology and the role of Christianity in Latin America. He earned a B.A. degree with honors in history from the University of Pennsylvania in 1951. He earned a B.D. degree from the Yale Divinity School in 1955, and a Ph.D. in history and philosophy of religion from Harvard University in 1963. He has written several books include: The secular city, The feast of fools, Seduction of the Spirit, Turning East, Fire from Heaven, When Jesus Came to Harvard, The Future of Faith, How to Read the Bible, and The Market as God.
