Sir John Suckling was born in Whitton, London, England. He was an English poet, playwright and a prominent figure among those renowned for careless gaiety and wit, the accomplishments of a Cavalier poet. He was also the inventor of the card game cribbage. He is best known for his poem "Ballad Upon a Wedding". He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. He wrote several poems include: The Cavalier Poets (with Robert Herrick, Richard Lovelace, Edmund Waller, and Thomas Carew), Fragmenta aurea, and The poems of Sir John Suckling. He wrote several plays include: Aglaura and The Goblins. He was knighted in 1630.
