Grace Nichols was born in Georgetown, Guyana. She is a Guyanese poet. She took a Diploma in Communications from the University of Guyana. She worked as a teacher, journalist, and in government information services. She moved to the UK in 1977. Her first collection of poetry, I is a Long Memoried Woman, won the 1983 Commonwealth Poetry Prize. She has written other books include: The fat black woman's poems, Whole of a morning sky(novel), Come on into my tropical garden(poems), Lazy thoughts of a lazy woman(poems), Sunris(poems- won Guyana Poetry Prize), Startling the flying fish, Picasso, I Want My Face Back, I Have Crossed an Ocean(poems), A Caribbean Dozen, and Everybody Got a Gift(poems). She lives in Lewes, East Sussex, South East England.
