James Jones was born in Robinson, Illinois, USA. He was an American novelist known for his explorations of World War II and its aftermath. He served in the United States Army from 1939 to 1944, and was present at the attack on Pearl Harbor as well as the battle for Guadalcanal, where he was decorated with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He also worked as a journalist covering the Vietnam War. He wrote several novels include: From Here to Eternity(Won National Book Award), Some Came Running, The Pistol(National Book Award Finalist), The Thin Red Line, The Merry Month of May, A Touch of Danger, and Whistle.
