James MacGregor Burns was born in Melrose, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American presidential biographer, historian, political scientist, and a pioneer in the study of leadership. He earned a B.A. degree from Williams College in 1939. He received his Ph.D. in political science from Harvard University in 1947. He also attended the London School of Economics. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army as a combat historian in the Pacific theater, and was awarded the Bronze Star and four Battle Stars. He then joined the faculty at Williams College in 1947, where he taught political science until his retirement in 1986. He was best known for his two-part biography of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the second volume of which, Roosevelt: The Soldier of Freedom, was awarded both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He served as president of the American Political Science Association. He wrote several books include: Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox(Biography), John Kennedy: A Political Profile(Biography), Leadership, The power to lead, and Fire and Light.
