John Davison Rockefeller III was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American philanthropist. He was the eldest son of philanthropists John D. Rockefeller Jr. and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. He earned a BS degree in industrial relations from Princeton University in 1929. He was a major force behind the establishment of the Council on Foundations, the Foundation Center, and Independent Sector. He took a leading role in organizing the Commission on Foundations and Private Philanthropy and the Commission on Private Philanthropy and Public Needs. He was also a major supporter of the Population Council. Rockefeller College at Princeton University was named in his honor in 1982.
