Jean Renoir was born in Montmartre, Paris, France. He was a French film director, screenwriter, actor, producer and author. He was the son of painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir. In 1924, he directed Une Vie Sans Joie or Catherine, the first of his nine silent films, most of which starred his first wife, Catherine Hessling. He directed several films include: Nana (also writer), The Little Match Girl, On purge bébé, Night at the Crossroads, Madame Bovary, Partie de campagne (also writer, actor), The Lower Depths, The Crime of Monsieur Lange (also producer, writer), La Grande Illusion (also writer), La Bête Humaine (also writer, actor), The Rules of the Game (also writer, actor), Swamp Water, The Southerner, The Woman on the Beach (also writer), The River (also producer, writer), French Cancan (also writer), Picnic on the Grass (also writer), and The Elusive Corporal.
