Gerard De Nerval was born in Paris, France. He was the nom-de-plume of the French poet, novelist, essayist, short story writer, and translator Gérard Labrunie. A major figure of French romanticism who worked in many genres, he is best known for his poems and novellas, especially the collection Les Filles du feu, which includes the novella Sylvie and the poem El Desdichado. He wrote other books include: Voyage to the Orient, The Salt Smugglers, Aurelia, and Les Illuminés(collection of narratives or essays).
