Science and technology, like all original creations of the human spirit, are unpredictable. If we had a reliable way to label our toys good and bad, it would be easy to regulate technology wisely. But we can rarely see far enough ahead to know which road leads to damnation. Whoever concerns himself with big technology, either to push it forward or to stop it, is gambling in human lives.

Freeman John Dyson was born in Crowthorne, Berkshire, England. He is an English-born American theoretical physicist and mathematician, known for his work in quantum electrodynamics, solid-state physics, astronomy and nuclear engineering. He is professor emeritus at the Institute for Advanced Study, a Visitor of Ralston College, and a member of the Board of Sponsors of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from Trinity College, Cambridge University in 1945. He has written several books include: Disturbing the universe, Origins of Life, From Eros to Gaia, Imagined Worlds, The Scientist as Rebel, A many-colored glass, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Dreams of Earth and Sky, and Weapons and hope.
