Erwin Chargaff was born in Czernowitz, Chernivtsi, Ukraine. He was an Austrian-American biochemist. He was a professor of biochemistry at Columbia University medical school. Through careful experimentation, he discovered two rules that helped lead to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA. From 1924 to 1928, he studied chemistry in Vienna, and earned a doctorate working under the direction of Fritz Feigl. He awarded the Pasteur Medal in 1949 and the National Medal of Science in 1974.
