John Frederick Clute was born in Toronto, Canada. He is a Canadian author, critic, novelist and screenwriter. He lived in the United States from 1956-1964, and lived in Britain since 1969. He earned a BA degree from New York University in 1962. He is a co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and of The Encyclopedia of Fantasy, as well as The Illustrated Encyclopedia Of Science Fiction, all of which won Hugo Awards for Best Non-Fiction. He is also author of the critical essay collections Strokes, Look at the Evidence, and Scores. He has written several novels, including Appleseed and The Disinheriting Party. He has written a film, entitled Winter Kept Us Warm.
