John Arbuthnot was born in Inverbervie, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was a Scottish physician, mathematician and satirist in London. He is best remembered for his contributions to mathematics, his membership in the Scriblerus Club, and for inventing the figure of John Bull. He graduated with an arts degree from Marischal College in 1685. He earned an MD degree from the University of St Andrews in 1696. He was elected to be a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1704. In 1705, he became physician extraordinary to Queen Anne. In 1710, he was elected fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He is the author of book, entitled The history of John Bull.
