Hilda Gerarda van Stockum was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She was a Dutch author and illustrator. She grew up in the Netherlands and Ireland, lived for many years in the United States, and lived in England from about 1973. The Winged Watchman(also illustrator) is her best-known book. She wrote several books include: A Day on Skates(children's novel-also illustrator), The Mitchells(also illustrator), Canadian Summer, Patsy and the Pup, King Oberon's Forest, Friendly Gables, Little Old Bear, Mogo's flute, Penengro, Rufus Round and Round, and The Borrowed House. She was elected to the Honorary Council of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1983.
