John Henry Lanchester was born in Hamburg, Germany. He is a British journalist and novelist. He studied at Gresham's School in Holt, Norfolk, and St John's College, Oxford. His journalism has appeared in the London Review of Books, Granta, The Observer, The New York Review of Books, The Guardian, the Daily Telegraph and The New Yorker. He also regularly writes on food and technology for Esquire. He has written several novels include: The Debt to Pleasure (Won- Whitbread Book Award in the First Novel category in 1996, and Hawthornden Prize in 1997), Fragrant Harbour (Shortlisted for the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 2002), and Capital. His Non-fiction works include: Family Romance, Whoops!, and How to Speak Money.
