John Allyn McAlpin Berryman was born in McAlester, Oklahoma, USA. He was an American poet. He was considered a key figure in the Confessional school of poetry. He studied at Columbia College, Columbia University and Clare College, Cambridge University. He taught at a number of universities, including Wayne State University, Harvard University, Princeton University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Washington, the University of California at Berkeley, Brown University, and the University of Minnesota. He wrote several poems include: Homage to Mistress Bradstreet, 77 Dream Songs (Won- Pulitzer Prize for Poetry in 1965), Berryman's Sonnets, His Toy, His Dream, His Rest (Won- National Book Award for Poetry in 1969), The Dream Songs, Love & Fame, and Delusions, Etc. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1967.
