John Lindley Byrne was born in West Midlands, England. He is a British-born American cartoonist and writer. In 1970, he enrolled at the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary. He left the college in 1973 without graduating. Since the mid-1970s, he has worked on many major superheroes. His better-known work has been on Marvel Comics' X-Men and Fantastic Four and the 1986 relaunch of DC Comics' Superman franchise, the first issue of which featured comics' first variant cover. During the 1990s he produced a number of creator-owned works, including Next Men and Danger Unlimited.
