John Francis "Jack" Reed was born in Cranston, Rhode Island, United States. He is an American democratic politician. He is the senior United States Senator from Rhode Island, serving since 1997. He served in the United States House of Representatives from Rhode Island's 2nd congressional district from 1991 to 1997. He received a BS degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1971. He received a Masters of Public Policy degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He returned to West Point in 1978 as an associate professor in the Department of Social Sciences. Following graduation, he spent several years in active duty military service. In 1982, he graduated with his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and worked as an associate at the Washington, D.C. office of law firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan. He was elected as a state senator in 1984 and served three terms. He married professional Senate staffer Julia Hart.
