Sir Herbert Edward Read was born in Muscoates, North Yorkshire, England. He was an English historian, poet and art critic, best known for numerous books on art, which included influential volumes on the role of art in education. He studied at the University of Leeds. He was co-founder of the Institute of Contemporary Arts. Read's first volume of poetry was Songs of Chaos, self-published in 1915. His second collection, published in 1919, was called Naked Warriors. His Collected Poems appeared in 1946. He published a novel, The Green Child. He was professor of fine arts at the University of Edinburgh and editor of the trend-setting The Burlington Magazine. From 1953 to 1954 he served as the Norton Professor at Harvard University. He wrote several books include: Education Through Art, The meaning of art, A Concise History of Modern Painting, Art and Society, The Philosophy of Modern Art, Grass Roots of Art, and The Anatomy Of Art.
