James Oscar Smith was born in Norristown, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an American jazz musician. He helped popularize the Hammond B-3 electric organ, creating an indelible link between 1960s soul and jazz improvisation. He studied music at Royal Hamilton College of Music and Leo Ornstein School of Music in Philadelphia.
